Reading a textbook is not the same as reading a novel. Starting at the first sentence and continuing until the end may feel productive, but it often produces weak recall. At the end of each section, close or cover the book and explain what you just read. You can say it aloud, write a short summary, draw a simple process from memory, or answer the question you created from the heading.

This step is important because familiarity can be misleading. A page may seem clear while it is open, yet become difficult to explain once the wording is hidden. That gap tells you what to revisit.

When you cannot recall something, return to the relevant paragraph rather than restarting the entire section. Clarify the missing point, close the book again, and make another attempt.   • Identify remaining gaps. Write down unclear points to ask about in class, investigate in another source, or review during your next study session.

Review the chapter instead of rereading it

A full reread is rarely the best default. Begin a later review by trying to recall the chapter’s structure, main ideas, and key terms without looking. Then use your notes and the textbook to check what you missed.

Review in short sessions spread over time. Focus each session on retrieval: answer questions, explain concepts, or work through problems. If your subject involves formulas, apply them without copying a worked example. If it involves arguments, reconstruct the claim and evidence. If it involves a sequence, put the stages in order.
